The Best And Worst Things Ever! (of the week) - 11/20/09

Posted by: Adam Morrison | Nov 20 2009 2:50PM

Nothing else that happened this week quite compares to me discovering this.

Dee Snider (Twisted Sister frontman, solo artist, author, actor, and everything else) has started a campaign called Take Back The Horns. At that site you will find the mission statement, in which Dee explains the problem. Basically, the problem is that The Metal Horns are being thrown, so to speak, in non-metal situations and, occasionally, by non-metal individuals.

Not only do we now have a forum to discuss the issue, we can upload photos capturing instances of Metal Horn usage and vote on whether the situation/person is metal or not. Dee also helpfully explains the origins of the hand gesture in question, when it is and when it is not appropriate to use it, who is to blame for its widespread misuse, and ways to possibly dissuade offenders.

Dee Snider is the man with the conviction, the drive, and apparently the time to unite the metal community to take back The Metal Horns. His articles are also really funny. Cancel your plans to see New Moon and go to the site.

There's even a section to buy TBTH merch. That's right, they're selling everything from t-shirts and hats to boxer shorts and thongs. If I can justify spending $23.99, I'm going to buy the ceramic travel mug.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is a new Bob Dylan video. Well, it's really the song that I want to draw attention to.

I can't come down on an artist like Dylan. I know even the greatest have their moments of not so greatness...I'm going to say that song is best left forgotten. There is no Bob Dylan track called "Must Be Santa."

I leave you with this long-overdue PSA from Fred Durst. (Spoiler Alert) There will be profanity.

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Jeff Martin

    The World is Calling

Since the Tea Party disbanded in 2005, their former frontman has been working on a solo career, among other things. The lead single from his first and so far only solo studio album, 2006's Exile and the Kingdom, is reportedly an open letter to the Bush administration.

Sounds like The Tea Party (you guessed it!), The Doors at their most worldly psychedelic
  2. Hello Beautiful

    Virginia Symphony

This Whitby band blends punk, rock, and hip hop in a refreshingly unique and engaging way. Soundtrack For Scenario is out now, and keep an ear out for a new album in 2010.

    Sounds like 311, Billy Talent
  3. Think About Life

    Sweet Sixteen

You might think about life while listening to this Montréal band, but you'll probably be too distracted having a good time.

Sounds like SLAVE to the SQUAREwave, The Sounds crossed with a light-hearted MGMT
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage

    Don't Haunt This Place

Recently signed to Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's record label, Saddle Creek ... catchy Toronto by way of Alberta indie rock ... incredible harmonies!

Sounds like Ra Ra Riot, Death Cab For Cutie, Hayden
  5. Najuah

    I Don't Wanna Love U

Toronto six-piece fronted by two sisters. Diverse influences, a rock & roll attitude, and some good grooves give them very broad appeal.

Sounds like No Doubt stripped of their ska, some time before Gwen went bananas.
