Nickelback Opens for...Slipknot?

Posted by: Alan Cross | Mar 12 2010 12:00AM

Nickeback is making gazillions of dollars now, but it hasn’t been easy. They still talk about the night Nickelback was signed to open for Slipknot in Portugal during the summer of 2002.

When the promoter called with the offer, the band thought "Gee, opening for an extreme band like Slipknot? We’re not sure this is such a good idea."

But then the promoter waved $150 grand in front of them, so the band said "For one set? Okay, we’re in." Not a good idea. Nickelback made it through two songs before they were forced off the stage with a volley of wine bottles. The show was also held near a quarry, so after the wine bottles came the rocks. What triggered the reaction?

Apparently, the trouble started the moment the band launched into "How You Remind Me."

I am no Nickleback "fan", but I like some of their tunes, and I give them mad respect for their work ethic, and giving their fans what they want. A good time.
