On August 16, 1985, REM played the Concert Hall in Toronto. This was their second visit to the city–and it didn't go well. First of all, they didn't get a soundcheck and the sound that night was awful.
They tried to make up for it by playing a half hour of requests as an encore. That was one of the few times anyone saw REM play "California Dreaming" by the Mamas and Papas. But it was at the end of the night that things got extra weird. Guitarist Peter Buck was literally chased onto the tour bus by a male fan.
He wanted to establish some kind of special bond with Peter by offering him the use of his girlfriend's body for the night. Definitely a "thanks but no thanks situation," don’t you think?
