MySpace Music Introducing 30-Second Audio Ads

Posted by: Adam Morrison | Feb 9 2010 12:00PM

MySpace Music, a joint venture between News Corp. and major recording companies, is experimenting with audio ads that must play before users can listen to free, streaming music.

AP reports that the 30-second ads began appearing last week and that MySpace Music wants to boost the frequency of such ads before settling on how often they'll be running.

The ads won't necessarily play before every single song—if they did, I imagine that would get kind of irritating when listening to a full album.

MySpace may not have a chance to dominate social networking, but I think it's worth them focusing on being a dominant force in the world of streaming music. If I were them, I'd make sure that I was making as much money as possible from it as long as it didn't have a negative effect on the customer experience.

I can't imagine any users getting too upset about this, because there are already many sites/services that have something similar in place and I don't think such ads are a big inconvenience.

I hardly ever look at the ads and they irritate me whin I want to listen to music. I think what myspace should do is to have the ability of someone listening and wants to download the song, they get .10 for every song downloaded from there sight. So If I'm using myspace and clicj on a persons somg and want to here more, I click on the cd cover icon which takes me to a sight where I can listen to all the songs and buy or download the songs to my desktop. For every song bought through myspace. they get.10 the artists gets his .60 and the other parties that sell the music also gets there cut. This would generate alot of sales. Myspace could work with all the other music venders so you could buy at any one of them. Sincerely Gerald lambert

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Jeff Martin

    The World is Calling

Since the Tea Party disbanded in 2005, their former frontman has been working on a solo career, among other things. The lead single from his first and so far only solo studio album, 2006's Exile and the Kingdom, is reportedly an open letter to the Bush administration.

Sounds like The Tea Party (you guessed it!), The Doors at their most worldly psychedelic
  2. Hello Beautiful

    Virginia Symphony

This Whitby band blends punk, rock, and hip hop in a refreshingly unique and engaging way. Soundtrack For Scenario is out now, and keep an ear out for a new album in 2010.

    Sounds like 311, Billy Talent
  3. Think About Life

    Sweet Sixteen

You might think about life while listening to this Montréal band, but you'll probably be too distracted having a good time.

Sounds like SLAVE to the SQUAREwave, The Sounds crossed with a light-hearted MGMT
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage

    Don't Haunt This Place

Recently signed to Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's record label, Saddle Creek ... catchy Toronto by way of Alberta indie rock ... incredible harmonies!

Sounds like Ra Ra Riot, Death Cab For Cutie, Hayden
  5. Najuah

    I Don't Wanna Love U

Toronto six-piece fronted by two sisters. Diverse influences, a rock & roll attitude, and some good grooves give them very broad appeal.

Sounds like No Doubt stripped of their ska, some time before Gwen went bananas.
