Here’s The Deal: Tommy Lee, Them Crooked Vultures

Here’s the Deal with Tommy Lee

Before a Motley Crue show in Toronto last week, I had a chance to talk to Tommy Lee about the new Methods of Mayhem album.  He took advantage of a night off to do some work in a Toronto studio.  It’s the first Methods album in ten years—and it’s being made in a rather unusual way.

The new Methods of Mayhem is due in April.

Here’s the Deal with Them Crooked Vultures

And in case you missed Saturday Night Live, Them Crooked Vultures were the special guests—and the best skit of the night featured Dave Grohl playing drums in a wedding band.

Here’s the link for as long as it lasts. As far as I can tell, that they wrote the song for the skit (it’s a great Black Flag facsimile with a little Suicidal Tendencies thrown end) and the name of the fake band was “Crisis of Conformity,” not to be confused with “Corrosion of Conformity”. Good fun.

I am a hit-or-miss fan of SNL, but, Saturday nights episode (hosted by Asthon Kutcher) was one of the WORST ever. The bit where he was a pool boy banging his 110 year old boss...horrible. Thank god for Them Crooked Vultures that night

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Clothes Make the Man

    Air Loom

This Toronto-based band has some solid influences, including "music made by other people" and "paintings of half naked women and/or men fighting scary-looking science fiction creatures..." For now, you can pick up their new album at shows and check out new songs like this one via MySpace.

Sounds like Dinosaur Jr., Foo Fighters, Husker Du
  2. Winter Gloves

    Let Me Drive

A song from About A Girl, the Montreal band's 2008 release on Toronto's Paper Bag Records. Lots of keyboards and drums glued together with just enough fuzz.

Sounds like Phoenix working with Woodhands
  3. Yukon Blonde

    Wind Blows

This catchy, harmony-laden music is created in British Columbia, a little ways from Yukon. Luckily, the tunes are good enough that we can get past the false advertising in the band's name.

Sounds like CSN, The Band, Fleetwood Mac
  4. Styrofoam Ones

    Blue Lines

This Toronto synth-rock band is known for dance floor-slaying shows, and their live energy and urgency has been captured on an independently released self-titled EP.

Sounds like a punkier Woodhands, a rockier Opopo
  5. iwrestledabearonce

    Tastes Like Kevin Bacon

Metal that throws a bunch of genres into a giant stew, ingests it, and spews it back up again. The band is currently selling merch with the slogan (in rainbow writing), "Metal Just Got Gay."

Sounds like Dillinger Escape Plan, Between The Buried And Me, Evanescence (yes)
