5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Girl + the Machine

    We Take the Train

Not to be confused with Florence + The Machine, this band is from suburban Toronto—except for the singer, who's from an island off the coast of Malaysia. They have lots of costumes, analog instruments, and songs with bits of different languages.

Sounds like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bjork, Pink Floyd
  2. Rodrigo Y Gabriela

    Hanuman

When was the last time you heard of an album being recorded in Ixtapa? Producer John Leckie (Stone Roses, Muse, Simple Minds) was in charge of one track.

Sounds like a flamenco band who would rather rock than play at weddings.
  3. Ellie Goulding

    Under the Sheets

Finished at the top of the BBC's Sound of 2010 list, just like Florence and the Machine did last year. Can she live up to the pressure?

Sounds like Passion Pit or MGMT, but with a female singer.
  4. Hurts

    Wonderful Life

Stylish, well-dressed and often filmed/photographed in black-and-white, this two-piece channels the electropop of 1983. Modern haircuts, though, thank goodness.

Sounds like Lotus Eaters, Tears for Fears, melancholic Simple Minds
  5. Black

    Wonderful Life

A big hit for Black, the musical vehicle for Colin Vearncombe, back in the 80s. Actually, this was two hits—it was released as a single twice in Europe.

Sounds like Toto, Lionel Richie, Ace of Base
