Bob Seger On The Road

Posted by: Jeff Woods | Oct 27 2009 12:00PM

For the working musician, life on the road has its share of bumps.  There’s adoring fans, and there’s stalkers.   Sure, you get to see the world, from a tour bus.  Ever slept on a bus?   Most of them come with rule #2, which is NO #2 on the bus!

So what’s the upside again?  Oh right, performing, exposing your new album, grown your fan base.  And every now and again there’s those rare glimpses of inspiration.  Like in the early 70’s when, not yet a superstar, Bob Seger is on the road again, trying to make a name for himself outside of the Michigan area.

One night Seger found himself in yet another faceless town - Eau Claire, Wisconsin. (no offense to our pals in Eue Claire).  Sitting alone in his hotel room, he started writing a song about being on “the long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha”.

And while it found a spot on Seger’s Back in 72’ album, THIS road song didn’t actually  find it’s feet until Bob found himself on the road again, up on the stage again, singing ‘here I go, turn the page’ and recording it for release on the classic 1975 double album “Live Bullet”.

(Play: Bob Seger - Turn The Page - especially the live version off "Live Bullet")

I grew up in Southern Ontario and heard a lot of Bob Seger growing up. Bob had/has a unique sound and I like his music. This song I don't care for.

Hey Jeff, though never famous, I too was a touring musician and I can completely relate to Seger's plight.

Jeff Woods: I'll bet. To the bit Bob sings about 'is that a woman or a man', I think one of the greatest exercises, which can lead to a practise, is for people not to assume anything about anyone, that is, not to pass judgement because of the length of their freaking hair etc. I'm training my parents-in-law-to-be on that one!
