Slipknot; ExploreMusic

I recently had the chance to speak with Corey Taylor & Shawn “The Clown” Crahan of Slipknot backstage at a recent show in Calgary.  In fact, I flew out West in order to specifically interview the band about 10 years of Slipknot.  They had launched a West coast Canadian tour with Deftones (you can hear that interview here) in celebration of their 1999 face ripping self titled record which by some weird twist of fate, ended up selling bazillions of copies, despite being heavy as hell…creating a diehard legion of maggots as a result.  They were also supporting their most recent record, All Hope Is Gone.

Anyways, I, being one said maggot, remember getting a  free Slipknot sampler tape outside some metal show as a kid…it contained the tracks Wait And Bleed and Spit It Out… and a picture of 9 scary-ass serial killer looking dudes on the cover.  I still have the that tape… so it was extremely interesting to get to speak with both Corey and Shawn about that time of their career, especially considering how much Slipknot has evolved over the early years.  That said, to this day, the first 6 tracks on that first record still spark something inside me.  Anyways, check out what #6 and #8 had to say about it….especially towards the end of the interview…some of the stories involved in the making of that very first record are hilarious…and kinda creepy.

Also, if you are fan of this band, I highly recommend picking up the celebratory reissue of the 1999 self titled album…if not just for the DVD alone, it’s totally worth it.  Dang.   If you’re not a fan of this band, go see them live.  Nuff said.

Thanks to both Corey and Shawn for sharing that 10 years with me, check it…

I really like this band and have for a long time, but these 2 are very, very full of themselves. "Kids waiting for something to help them deal with divorce, school, or addiction. That's what Slipknot does." They take themselves a little too serious. Kind of reminds me of Lars. "Well they should be full of themselves, they're Slipknot"..... There now you don't need to say it.

Ten wonderful years. I can still remember watching them walk onstage just before Fear Factory on the second stage in Mt View California in Aug of 1999. Thier 3rd show I believe since the release of SlipKnoT. I will never forget the first song I heard live from them (SiC). I never saw anything like it! Ten years, ten shows and after meeting almost all of them since that day I'm just as proud now for believing in them as I was scared back then for letting them into me. I'm glad I did. I think they have one more album in them. I dont want the last time I saw them to be my last SlipKNoT show. Joey is my favorite always will be. I love these men and I'm so proud for all they have done for US and I'll stand up with them forever and say... "dont ever judge me".

By far the best SlipKnoT interview I've heard. Corey and Clown compliment each other perfectly in answering questions and telling crazy stories. It was interesting to hear them talk about how they grew through the music, and experienced so much over the years, because for some of us (older fans) we had to go through the terrors of becoming adults and then we found the music that helps us shred through all of bullsh*t we already lived. It gives you a perfect sense of catharsis.

Slipknot is amazing, this band has influenced me from a young age, I've seen them both on main stage and on second stages and regardless they've always been able to amaze me, with each and every album they've shown progress, it is about god damn time they got some recognition, as said it the interview, what other band has 9 members and has been able to put out amazing album after amazing album, there will never be another band like slipknot, thier music speaks to so many people, and will speak to people in the future. cannot describe what slipknot has done for me, and for alot of people, i am now and forever will be a MAGGOT!

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Jeff Martin

    The World is Calling

Since the Tea Party disbanded in 2005, their former frontman has been working on a solo career, among other things. The lead single from his first and so far only solo studio album, 2006's Exile and the Kingdom, is reportedly an open letter to the Bush administration.

Sounds like The Tea Party (you guessed it!), The Doors at their most worldly psychedelic
  2. Hello Beautiful

    Virginia Symphony

This Whitby band blends punk, rock, and hip hop in a refreshingly unique and engaging way. Soundtrack For Scenario is out now, and keep an ear out for a new album in 2010.

    Sounds like 311, Billy Talent
  3. Think About Life

    Sweet Sixteen

You might think about life while listening to this Montréal band, but you'll probably be too distracted having a good time.

Sounds like SLAVE to the SQUAREwave, The Sounds crossed with a light-hearted MGMT
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage

    Don't Haunt This Place

Recently signed to Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's record label, Saddle Creek ... catchy Toronto by way of Alberta indie rock ... incredible harmonies!

Sounds like Ra Ra Riot, Death Cab For Cutie, Hayden
  5. Najuah

    I Don't Wanna Love U

Toronto six-piece fronted by two sisters. Diverse influences, a rock & roll attitude, and some good grooves give them very broad appeal.

Sounds like No Doubt stripped of their ska, some time before Gwen went bananas.
