Earlier this week, Courtney Love spoke to The NME about her on again/off again album provisionally entitled Nobody’s Daughter. If I may quote

“Micko [Larkin of the band Larrikin Love] will be lead guitarist, and Hole bassist Melissa auf der Maur, though working on projects of her own, has returned for backing vocals, and may play bass on tours next year. The album is as good as done, with the rest of the touring line-up for now remaining TBC.”

So who was in the offices of ExploreMusic.com yesterday?  Melissa Auf Der Maur, who is in Toronto to perform at the North by Northeast Music Festival (www.nxne.com) and to screen her experimental film, Out of Our Minds.

Here's the trailer:

When I asked her about Courtney’s plans for her, she said this:

“All I can tell you is that I love Courtney to bits. She’s a nutbag and I really do care about her. She’s like a long-lost sister to me.

“We have not been in touch too much. We’ve been in touch this year after ten years of no contact, I will say that. This new record, she was (maybe still is; it seems a little vague) working with Michael Beinhorn who made Celebrity Skin [Hole’s 1998 album].”

“Not only do I feel a soul-sister connection with Courtney, but in particular, Michael Beinhorn and I had an incredible working relationship on Celebrity Skin.  And he called me and asked me if I would sing on [Courtney’s] new solo record—which is what I understood it was. And I said ‘Yes’ because I enjoy working with him and do....Well, she and I have a history of making music together and I’m happy to visit her again in the future.

“I think you can’t take a Hole reunion thing that lightly.  It’s gonna take a little more organizing than just ‘I’ll come and sing some backups and then we got Hole.’

“I don’t know what to say about [the situation]. I’m a little confused as to what the plan with that is. All I can tell you is that I like singing ooos, ahs, and la-la-las behind her voice.”

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Miss Li

    Bourgeois Shangri-la

Miss Li is Linda Carlsson, a Stockholm-based singer-songwriter. She's doing well with her latest album after getting some tracks in TV shows and commercials, including this one in an iPod ad. Upbeat, jazzy vocals and semi-cabaret pop.

Sounds like Hello Saferide, Beatles, Anna Ternheim
  2. Marina and the Diamonds

    Hollywood

Marina Diamandis and her crew are being hyped by the BBC as one of the five acts to watch in 2010. Single came out February 1.

Sounds like Gwen Stefani (but less OTT), Britney Spears (but WAY less trashy)
  3. Basia Bulat

    Gold Rush

Former Polaris Music Prize nominee returned with her second full-length album on Jan 26 . Plays an autoharp.

Sounds like Feist, She & Him, Sarah McLachlan
  4. Make Your Exit

    Kids

This unique-sounding group incorporates brass and harmony into their music. For ambient-folk lovers, this Toronto quintet is refreshing.

Sounds like Corduroy, southern version of The Framework and Arkells
  5. The Folk Implosion

    Natural One

The 1995 movie "Kids" had, among other things, a great soundtrack. This song actually ended up being the now-defunct Folk Implosion's biggest hit.

Sounds like slower Guided By Voices, Hayden, Beck
