In 1977, Martha and the Muffins emerged from the Toronto punk/new wave/art pop scene. Under both the original band name and "M + M," they've released seven albums and made it onto the Canadian top 40 chart with several singles. A few singles, like 1980's "Echo Beach," also had some success internationally.
While Martha Johnson and Mark Gane are the band's core members—they've also scored TV shows and films and released one JUNO-winning children's album, the lineup has included such musicians as saxophone player Martha Ladly (Roxy Music, The Associates, Robert Palmer) and bassist Jocelyne Lanois—whose brother Daniel, a then unknown music producer, worked with the band on three of their records.
The band's first new release in 18 years, Delicate, is out now—on Muffin Music, of course.
