The Paperbacks: "Slow Learners"

Posted by: Adam Morrison | Mar 9 2010 12:00AM

This is the Indie Track of the Day Giveaway. It's just like it sounds—every day we spotlight a song from an indie band/artist and we let you keep the track to do with whatever you like (within the limits of the law).

The song is part of our podcast, so if you want it (you do), search on iTunes for the ExploreMusic.com podcast, or just scroll down to the bottom of this page and click the links.

The latest release from The Paperbacks is Lit From Within, a 32-track double-album that finds the Winnipeg band heading in many interesting musical and lyrical directions.

The band has gone through several lineup changes since forming in 2001. Remaining from the original lineup are songwriter Doug McLean and  bassist Jaret McNabb, and the new lineup also includes guitarist Kevin Andrechuk, drummer Corey Biluk, and keyboardist Kevin McLean.

The new album was produced by McNabb, who also produced the band's debut, An Episode of Sparrows—The Weakerthans' John K Samson produced their second album, An Illusion Against Death—and guest musicians include Jahmeel Russell (Projektor, Kittens), Alison DeGroot, and Rosalyn Dennett (Oh My Darling), Mike Koop (The Bonaduces, The Kicker), Andrew Filyk (Anthem Red, The City Champs), and former Paperback Ian LaRue.

  2. Four Year Strong

It Must Really Suck to Be Four Year Strong Right Now

Catchy pop punk band that's burned through more than half a dozen members in its nine year existence.

  3. Riverboat Gamblers

    Victory Lap

From the Texan punk band's appropriately titled 2009 album, Underneath the Owl.

Sounds like Cobra Skulls, The Loved Ones, Dillinger Four
  4. Tip The Van

    Cherry Red

Ska-loving Connecticut rock band with six members—three women, and three guys named Brian.

Sounds like No Doubt, but with more guts.
