This is the Indie Track of the Day Giveaway. It's just like it sounds—every day we spotlight a song from an indie band/artist and we let you keep the track to do with whatever you like (within the limits of the law).
The song is part of our podcast, so if you want it (you do), search on iTunes for the ExploreMusic.com podcast, or just scroll down to the bottom of this page and click the links.
Kinnie Starr is a tri-lingual Canadian artist whose music blends genres including hip hop and rock.
Starr originally signed with Mercury/Island/Def Jam in 1996 after a massive bidding war. She's since enjoyed working relationships with Lakeshore Records USA, Maple Music Canada, and Maple Music’s flagship 2006 label, Fontana USA—also being a prolific writer, Starr has a publishing deal with Ole Publishing. She's also worked with Wendy and Lisa (Prince), David Campbell (Beck’s father), Carmen Rizzo (Alanis Morisette), Chris Bruce and Earl Harvin (Seal, The The), Tegan and Sara, and Nelly Furtado, who cites Starr as a key influence.
Starr’s songs have been featured on The L-Word, Thirteen, in Zeller’s advertisements, and on Fashion Television Canada.
Starr has toured Canada, the U.S., Germany, Japan, Spain, and England, and performed in Canada’s National Aboriginal Achievement Awards twice.
In 2003, she was cast in Cirque Du Soleils’s “Zumanity” show and she was nominated for a JUNO in the category of "Best New Artist."
Starr co-founded Vancouver’s "Aboriginal Music Lab" with Sal Fererras and Vancouver Community College in 2006, and in 2008, The Royal British Museum in Victoria recognized Starr as one of BC’s cultural icons.
On her latest album, A Different Day, Starr shows off her singer-songwriter abilities (as opposed to her well-established rapping skills) and all the songs are about love and relationships.
