With literally hundreds of bands playing Canadian Music Week starting today, we’re trying to offer some highlights to help you put together a customized gig guide.
“Farewell, Mona Lisa” by The Dillinger Escape Plan
If you’re looking for something aggressive and math-y, you cannot go wrong with The Dillinger Escape Plan. They’re from New Jersey. Given their intensity and penchant for doing, uh, the passionate thing, it’s amazing they’re still together.
They finally have a new record. It’s coming in two weeks and will be called “Option Paralysis”. It’ll be ready for consumption on the 23rd. The first track is “Farewell, Mona Lisa”. Be careful with this, okay? It’ll cleanse the pallet.
“Tempting Time” by Animals As Leaders
This is an odd name: Animals As Leaders. They’re from DC and they describe themselves as “progressive experimental metal”—which is why they’re a great fit to open for Dillinger Escape Plan on sunday—even though they’re not as aggressive. They do have the math-rock thing happening, though. “Tempting Time” is a good song. The album is self-titled.
“Radio Silence” by Bastard Child Death Cult
I picked the next band on the list just because of their name. They’re called Bastard Child Death Cult. ”BCxDC” for short. Hardcore punk from Toronto. Five guys, lots of ink—and they will crush you. My favourite is “Radio Silence”. That’s from a record called “Year Zero”. It’s magic that will melt the wax out of your years. You’ll breath easier and your sinuses won’t hurt anymore.
“Ce Soir” by Monogrenade
Monogrenade is from Montreal. They’re in the electronica spheres and sing in French. A song called “Ce Soir” from an EP entitled “La Saveur des Fruits”.
“Run To My Door” by The Speaking Tongues
Finally, it’s back to Toronto for The Speaking Tongues. Garage rock plus Mississippi boogie. White Stripes comparisons aren’t far off. There are just two people in the band, too—except that the drummer is a dude. You’ll hear all this in a song called “Run To My Door”.
