Here’s The Deal: Nine Inch Nails, Anvil, Selling Out, My Sister Ocean

Here’s the Deal with Trent Reznor’s Garage Sale

When you’ve been in the business as a long as Trent Reznor, you’re going to have a lot of old gear lying around.  So what do you do when you run out of storage space?  Have a garage sale, of course.

Trent has been clearing stuff out for months now and a new pile of gear has just gone up for sale on eBay.  As of this morning, there were another thirty-five items, including road cases, effects pedals, cymbals, guitars and keyboard peripherals—and the prices are quite reasonable.  Lemme tell you something, if you’re a fan, owning some of this stuff would be way better than another t-shirt.

Check out the auction site.  Just stay away from the road cases.  I’ve got my eye on one of them.

By the way, The Downward Spiral from Nine Inch Nails turned 16 yesterday.  It came out on March 8, 1994.

Here’s the Deal with Anvil’s Award

Great news for anyone who is following the story of Anvil.  Yeah, they got shut out of the Academy Awards—the Oscar eventually went to that don’t-kill-the-dolphins documentary—but Anvil’s movie won an Independent Spirit Award, which is a pretty big deal in the world of film.  Have a look at their acceptance speech.

Here’s the Deal with Selling Out

There’s an interesting article in the LA Times about the concept of “selling out.”  In the age of downloading and cratering CD sales, can an artist still “sell out” in the traditional sense?  The writer argues no, you can’t.  The rules of the game have changed so much—and in some cases, the only way to survive in the business is by licensing your music to things like TV commercials.  Bands—new and old—have to find new sources of revenue.

It’s a fascinating position that’s worth reading.  It may make you look at things very differently.

Here’s the Deal with My Sister Ocean

And let’s get caught up on My Sister Ocean.  They’re the Edmonton band issuing a new song the first Tuesday of every month until they have a full album later this year, which they will then called The Month of Tuesday. The March song came out last week and is called “Please Don’t Say It’s So”.

ExploreMusic Playlist: The songs featured on the radio show today were:

“Rescue Me” by Hawthorne Heights
“Please Don’t Say It’s So” by My Sister Ocean
“Air Loom” by Clothes Make The Man
“Burning Bridges” by K-OS

And don’t forget to check out today’s Tuesday Guide for the latest CD and DVD releases.
