Canadian Music Week is the biggest music festival in the land. Hundreds of bands and thousands of punters from all over the world. Things start next Wednesday and until it’s all over, the daily “Five Songs You Hotta Hear” list will feature bands scheduled to appear.
“Body Shot” by Electric Six
Electric Six is a great band out of Detroit that’s almost impossible to put in a nice, neat category. If you must, call them electronic dance garage rock. Whatever the lineup, there are always six of them. Sadly, Dr. Diet Mountain Dew is no longer part of the band. But Smorgasbord—the bass player—is still here.
The current album is called “Kill”. “Body Shot” is a song that tells you a lot of what they’re all about. Listen for the Phil Collins sample. We’re sure he’s pleased.
“That’s All” by Zeus
Next, we have Zeus. This the Canadian Zeus. They’re from Toronto. We talked about them on the show on Monday. Their current album is “Say Us”—but since we broached the subject of Phil Collins with Electric Six, you need to hear their cover of the Genesis song “That’s All”.
“When Will We Get To Meet The Boss” by Papier Tiger
Bands come from all over the world for CMW. Papier Tiger is from Nantes, France. Three guys, no bass player. They have a cool record called “The Beginning and End of Now”. They’re noisy—and we like noise. Check out a track called “When Will We Get To Meet The Boss”.
“Surrender (You’re Leaving)” by Desperate Union
Okay, back to Toronto. Desperate Union in a five-piece, all of whom aren’t allowed to drink in most provinces yet. We don’t think a single one of them is over 19. But they’ve already attracted the attention of one of Tool’s producers, so there’s something here. Give a listen to a song called “Surrender (You’re Leaving)”.
“Paul Simon” by The Russian Futurists
Finally, The Russian Futurists. They are also from Toronto. They’re psych-y, pop-y and originally from Cornwall, Ontario. And you gotta love a band that’s written a song about Paul Simon. That’s actually what the song is called “Paul Simon”.
Another five bands from Canadian Music Seek 2010 coming on the next show. Meanwhile, if you want to browse through all the acts—and to find out when and where they’re playing—go to the “festival” section of www.cmw.net.
