Metallica Part 3
It’s time to fill you in on the stuff we covered today on our radio show.
Today we started off the show with “Ride To California” by Paper Tongues Explore.
How’s this for a band name: “Paper Tongues”. Seven guys who got their start playing for the homeless. We’ll explain. But first, you should hear this. It’s called “Ride To California”.
Paper Tongues are from Charlotte, North Carolina. And they came out of a weekly event called “Improv Music Experience,” which basically involved setting up and playing for the homeless at one of Charlotte’s main intersections. That’s where a lot of these street sounds were born.
5 SONGS YOU GOTTA HEAR TODAY:
Five fresh tunes from bands you otherwise might have missed.
“Cities Burn Down” by Awaking State
Alan’s been following this guy named Kent Martell. He’s a super music fan from Toronto who came in to see him with some demos over the years. But he had ambition for his band, which he calls “Awaking State”. Kent attracted the attention of Sylvia Massy, one of Tool’s producers. She invited Kent and the band down to her studio and helped mould those demos.
Two songs were picked and put into a beautiful press package. This is how you stand out from the pile of stuff that comes in the mail every day. This is gorgeous. Alan’s going take pictures and post them on the website so you can see the work that went into this.
One of the two songs that came with the press pack is called “Cities Burn Down”. Tool, Nine Inch Nails, early Filter—that’s the headspace.
There’s an EP called “Into The Machine” out now, but something more is coming in the spring. Keep an eye out for these people.
“Having A Hard Time” by Paris Luna
Song number two on today’s list is from Paris Luna. She’s from Athens, Georgia, and specializes in gentle guitar-based pop. If you remember a British band called The Sundays, then you’re right in the ballpark. “Having A Hard Time” from her album, “City Lights” is a good jumping-off point.
“Stand By Me” by Baron feat. Lemmy and Dave Lombardo
Song number 3: how many times have you thought to yourself “wouldn’t it be cool if Lemmy from Motorhead sang the old Ben E. King song ‘Stand By Me?’” Well, your prayers have been answered. It’s from the soundtrack to a skateboard film called “Extremely Sorry”.
“Promise Me” by Eightcubed
Eightcubed is a dude from Toronto. He specializes in making music that sort of sounds like old eight-bit computer music. Obviously very electronic. Give a listen to a track called “Promise Me”.
“Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” by Primus
And to end things off, a little bit of “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”. Great single from Primus. If you think The Red Hot Chili Peppers aren’t funky enough because they’re not very good musicians, then you need Primus. “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” is from a 1997 album called “The Brown Album”. Very strange video.
ExploreMusic TRIVIA:
One more time with Kirk Hammett coming up next. But first, think about this Primus question. If you are a Primus fan, what is your rallying cry to show your love for the band? What’s an acceptable shout of devotion?
“Primus sucks!” Perfectly cool with everyone.
ExploreMusic Feature Item: Metallica
Alan had a chance to meet with Kirk Hammett of Metallica last month. And one of the things they talked about was the new Metallica iPhone app. And it’s different from all the other apps out there.
Metallica and “Broken, Beaten and Scarred” from the “Death Magnetic” album. Thanks to Kirk and everyone in the Metallica crew for being so accomodating. Alan met Lars in the hallway and he was friendly, too.
ExploreMusic Playlist: The songs featured on the radio show today were:
“Ride To California” by Paper Tongues
“Cities Burn Down” by Awakening State
“Broken, Beaten and Scarred” by Metallica
That's it for today. I'm outta here. See you tomorrow.
