Deftones Part 1

It’s time to fill you in on the stuff we covered today on our radio show.

Today we started off the show with “Born and Raised” by Alexisonfire Explore.

First up, the latest from Alexisonfire. Third single from the “Old Crows/Young Cardinals” CD. This is “Born and Raised”.

They shot a video last month using some fans as extras. They put out the call through their website and through Twitter. Got a good crowd, too.

There’s some behind-the-scenes shots, too. It’s how they made the video.

Let’s do some news.

5) iTunes Becomes More Accessible

iTunes became slightly less annoying over the weekend. If you’ve ever clicked on an iTunes link in a web page, you had to wait for your computer to load iTunes (if you have it installed) or asked to install it (if you didn’t).

That’s gone now. Instead, click on a link and a new browser window opens up to something called “iTunes Preview” where you can look at some stuff without waiting for iTunes itself or being pestered to download it. It’s a small thing, but it removes an annoyance.

4) Anvil Fights Fast Food Flick

Anvil is one step closer to having their documentary nominated for an Academy Award. The International Documentary Association has its awards ceremony on December 4. The films that compete there are usually ones that end up going for Oscars, too.

“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” has been nominated in the key category of “Distinguished Documentary Achievement”. They have to beat “Food Inc,” which is that damning doc on the American food industry. That’ll be there biggest competition.

3) Making Music, One Pig At A Time

Earlier this year, we had a story about Matthew Herbert who is making an album called “One Pig”. This is an update.

He’s been recording sounds of a pig from birth to death. Pig samples will be used in the music. And once the pig has been slaughtered and cooked, he will sample sounds from the kitchen and the dinner table. And for dessert, he will play a flute made from the pig’s bones. Alan says he’s having a salad for dinner.

2) Oasis Light

Liam Gallagher says that he’s got a new band. It’s exactly like the old band, except without Noel. They are writing songs and expect to come up with a name before some gigs in the New Year. Here’s video of Liam on Italian radio talking about it.

1) Them Crooked Vultures Interrupted By Zepp?

The biggest debut record of the year will be out tomorrow. It’s the first album from Them Crooked Vultures—Josh from Queens of The Stone Age, Dave Grohl from the Foos and John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin.

Alan made a quick trip to L.A. on Friday to meet with them in their secret rehearsal studio. He asked John Paul Jones about how Them Crooked Vultures might be affected by a rumoured Led Zeppelin reunion.

So is that a scoop? No possibility of Led Zeppelin reuniting for Glastonbury next year? That’s what John Paul Jones seems to be saying. And that’s Josh Homme and Dave Grohl joking about it.

5 SONGS YOU GOTTA HEAR TODAY:

This is the part of show for the musically curious. It’s a list of five songs that you might not know about yet. It’s what we do five times a week.

Racing Lights” by Stars of Track and Field

Stars of Track and Field are a three-piece from Portland. In 2006, they issued a record called “Centuries Before Love and War” and it honestly didn’t leave Alan’s car for about a year. Vastly underrated CD. Turns out it was their third.

The fourth album is called “A Time For Lions”. They really should be British. First, their name comes from a line in a Belle and Sebastian song. Second, their sound is a mix of everything they like about Snow Patrol, Coldplay, My Bloody Valentine and even some Pink Floyd. Give a listen to a song called “Racing Lights”.

Youth Tunes” by Little Girls

The second song is much more minimalist. Little Girls are from Toronto. There are no small females in the band. Just four dudes. They’re kind of like a more melodic Sonic Youth. It that kind of thing appeals, spend some time with a song called “Youth Tunes”. Alan likes it a lot.

Bye Bye Bayou” by LCD Soundsystem

We haven’t featured anything from LCD Soundsystem in a while. This is James Murphy, the producer-turned-performer. I’m not sure what’s happening with the project right now. James has hinted that it may be over. Then he kinda backtracked on that.

A remix album came in September. And apparently, a new record is in the works. A single song has surfaced. It’s called “Bye Bye Bayou”.

Candice” by Blue Rodeo

Blue Rodeo is back with a new album. This is record number twelve. It’s called “The Things We Left Behind”. It was released on the 10th. Double CD, double vinyl. Very pretty packaging. A song called “Candice” is nice. Blue Rodeo will also play at halftime at the Grey Cup in Calgary on the 29th.

Stars” by Hum

And finally, a song from a CD that Alan stumbled across when his dog started pulling stuff off the shelf. Hum is an Illinois band who released a great record in 1995 called “You’d Prefer An Astronaut”. If you miss old-school Smashing Pumpkins—those waves of big guitars and feedback—then you should give these guys a listen. Very 90s—sounding. But that’s the point. You want a song called “Stars”.

ExploreMusic TRIVIA:

Part one with the Deftones is next. Let’s do a question about them. Legend has it that the band was originally financed under near tragic circumstances. What’s the story there?

The story goes like this: when he was 15, guitarist Stephen Carpenter was hit by a drunk driver while skateboarding. The money from the insurance settlement is what helped finance the start of the band.

ExploreMusic Feature Item: Deftones

They say that’s just a myth. Never actually happened like that. These days, they’re more concerned about another car accident—one that happened a year go this month. Bass player Chi Cheng is still in a coma. Mike Sullivan weaseled backstage at a show in Calgary to get the latest.

Meanwhile, check out the Chi Cheng website: oneloveforchi.com.

ExploreMusic Playlist: The songs featured on the radio show today were:

“Born and Raised” by Alexisonfire
“Scumbag Blues” by Them Crooked Vultures
“Racing Lights” by Stars of Track and Field
“Change (In The House of Flies)” by Deftones

That's it for today. I'm outta here. See you tomorrow.
