De-Timbaland-ized Chris Cornell

When tracks from Chris Cornell’s third solo album, Scream, started making the rounds last year, fans were confused.  The producer was Timbaland?  Electric R&B grooves?  And is that freakin’ Justin Timberlake on backing vocals? AN ‘N SYNC DUDE ON A RECORD BY THE GUY FROM SOUNDGARDEN?!?  The only thing missing was Kayne grabbing the mic halfway through a song.

Give Cornell credit for trying to shake up his solo career with a bold statement.  But the bottom line is that Scream did not work.  Outside of a kind review from Entertainment Weekly (they gave it a B+), the album got savaged by critics and fans.  It was a Grunge God/ Timbaland Fail.

But if you listened to Scream carefully, there was some good stuff underneath all the overproduction and R&B beats.  Michael Friedman, a Canadian ex-pat working in LA in the licensing and placement of music in films and TV, certainly thought so.

“I heard some ‘Black Hole Sun’ greatness deep within some of the songs,” he told me, “I also got to know Chris as a friend.  I ended up calling Jordan Zadorozny [of the Canadian indie band Blinker the Star and co-writer of song with Courtney Love and friend of Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham].”  I flew him down to LA and had him listen to some of the tracks in hopes that he could remix them somehow.”

The first track to emerge from this de-Timbalanding of Scream is “Never Far Away.”  In its original form, a funky mess obscurs what was actually a pretty good Soundgarden-esque mid-tempo rocker.  Jordan peeled back all the beats and turned up whatever guitar was there.  The result is a proper Chris Cornell song.

Through a roundabout series of connections, I managed to get Michael on the phone yesterday.  And with Chris Cornell’s permission, he sent me this unreleased re-imagined, de-cluttered and grunged-up version of “Never Far Away.”

Could this be the beginning of a Scream mulligan?
(PS: "Michael tells me that this version is a total re-recording, not a remix.")

Sounds decent. I love Cornell and his sound. To be honest, I haven't heard the Scream album. Only bits and pieces. Sounds different. I guess a lot of fans get used to what an artist or band produces. If they hear something to the contrary, them tend to get a little freaked. It's just one album, take it easy. It's an artists willingness to explore new ideas that makes them what they are and why you like them in the first place. Cheers to Chris for trying something new.

I love Chris Cornell, and I do enjoy 'Timbalandized' joints.....Scream, to me, still showed Chris' talent in a funky way. However.....i'll admit I like this version better. It's harder, more the style I like from Chris Cornell. Can't hate him for trying something new though, he's entitled to that.

Scream was not innovative or original. It's similiar to every other Timbaland produced album every made. It was over run with "beats" that made Chris sound incredibly rushed at points. At times the music completely drowned out Cornell's voice. It was horrid. Not because of the R&B, Hip Hop or any particular type of music, but because the production value sounded similiar to recording it on my answering machine.

I wish they would just re-do the whole album with this take on it. I don't mind this one (or Long Gone) in their original version, but I do really like the "rock" versions of them so much. It's hardly even lazy. I like having two versions of each song!

Sounds great, but a "proper Chris Cornell song"? What is that? I think if the art satisfies the artist who created it in the first place, then it is truly art. If the artist goes back to the drawing board to re-work it in order to satisfy citics and fans, then it is merely a piece of merchandise.

ALL OF YOU WITH NEGATIVE COMMENTS....GET OVER IT!!! The album is great, the concept is fresh, it's bold, and most importantly, it's CREATIVE. Isnt that what being an artist is all about??? I admit i was one of you negative people back during the late 90's when Metallica released load and reload, I hated those albums so much because it wasnt and justice for all type sounds. Now 10 yrs later I listen to load and reload with a different mindset and I really appreciate the music for what it is. Same thing here...Remember the album cover does not say Soundgarden or Audioslave, it says Chris Cornell. Why are all you buying an album with the expectation of it being Soundgarden or audioslave reincarnated? Try to appreciate the artistic ablility of two geniuses putting together their skills to create a bold and daring creation.

Just to be clear...I like EVERY album Chris Cornell has made, from Soundgarden up to and including Scream and I like this new remixed version too. I'm just happy he is using his incredible voice and vision to make great music. As for Scream, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. It's regrettable that so many "fans" are freaking out just because he tried something new. Bravo to Cornell for having the balls to try a new direction. I will listen to his music every time.

The Scream version is really much better. Amazing really. This guy heard some black hole sun deep within those tracks? what the hell. Timbaland is incredibly talented. A rhythm genius. Like someone else said, the Scream track is much more rich and beautifully layered. Layers aren't a bad thing. Chris put together some wonderful harmony tracks on Scream, which I don't think everyone appreciated. I turned this track off before it even ended, it just sounded weak compared to the original

Been listening since I saw him with Sound Garden out in LA in the late 80's. I have to think that "re-inventing" one's sound midstream is usually the way of a tired performer looking for a spark to re-ignite their career or an itching ear from listeing to supposed artistic frineds who want to collaborate on his shirt tails. In Chris's case, I think he is searching within himself to find a new edge on creativity and merely listened to bad advice. Hey, we all give it or take it from time to time. So, there is no reason to throw the baby out with the dish water. If it is really salvageable, there will also be doubt as to whether it's really worth buying it. No body wants a refurbed album. But he has planty of juice left, so this will pass. In the end, you have to fail once in a while to remember you are human, with the idea that you will re-find yourself, get back on course, and do someting new and truly brilliant and original. Certain musical concepts just don't blend well together for everyone. This, in my opinion, is the case. It's like putting chocolate pudding all over a good medium rare filet. Both are good by themselves and taste great in seperate dishes, but together, it's gross unless you haven't eaten for a week and are desperate. I think if he likes it, well, he will look back sometime in the future and realize it sounded good, but wasn't memorable. I still hum Black Hole Sun. This, I have already forgotten the tune to. True art is memorable- It has staying power. It has memorabilty. This does not. He will most likely transcend such collaberative venues and never return. Such is the imulsive life of a star.~S.D.

Never really listened to or owned a CD of Soundgarden or Chris's music, but this has huge potential in my estimation. I think the song is great w/out the Timbaland background. I do not like w/Timbaland. Song is catchy and vocals are expressive and awesome. Should get more airtime, as I really believe there is hit potential. Good luck Chris. I will p/u any new CD that has this song on it. Now, how can I get this on my Ipod? Thanks - Mel/Hamilton,ON

I hated the Timbaland mixes and I usually love all things Cornell related. I'm a huge fan of Timbaland as well for the most part, but Cornell just didn't shine with Timbaland behind the mixes. The Soundgarden/Timbaland nuthuggers will always have an extreme opinion from either side of the fence but personally I'm just glad someone salvaged this track. Hope they get a crack at some more of his stuff. The breakdown at 2:52 is killer. Thanks for sharing this!

First - thanks Alan for sharing this and all music news....you're amazing. If anyone got a chance to see Cornell perform his Scream material live, it's obvious how much better it sounds with instruments. Second - Cornell is a legend. So some fans don't appreciate a different sound he tested....Europe is so much more open-minded with everything, music is no exception. Most haters are of Scream are of the North American kind...you don't like it, too bad, move on and don't listen. His Soundgarden days were his strongest - his ability to reach an audience speaks volumes. Can't wait to see what is next.

Very good! The least it can do is salvage the album. I was disappointed that a solid album like Carry On had to be followed up with a failed experiment like Scream. What he needs to do now is get into a studio with a real band and turn it up a notch!

I'm sorry but J-Bomb u r just a fan! Chris is an artist who can explore different genres without your permission. That is what artist do. Be grateful you were around the times of SoundGarden and AudioSlave and enjoy! You do not tell anyone what they should do. If you don't like their music don't listen to it!! Simple as that! I happen to love anything Chris Cornell sings. That is what a true fan is! I don't tell him what he should do because God knows I am not a musician or singer...are u? Sorry but I hate comments like that only because I think Chris has already given us all he can and all that is expected of him for decades now. Be grateful with what you have had. If they Soundgarden or Audioslave reunite, awesome!! I'll be there with you happy as hell, however don't criticize someone for doing what they are passionate about: Music!

TheRealDeal and BobbyDavro are talking nonsense - the easiest way for Cornell to "dive head first at the fame and $$$" would have been to get his old band together and go on a money-hoovering grunge reunion trek around the world, perhaps in a package tour with those other early 90s chestnuts Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam. Not by making a risky piece of hybrid dance/rock which he knew wouldn't appeal to his core fanbase, in an unfamiliar genre, with unfamiliar musicians, without track breaks between songs making radio play and iTunes marketing difficult. Scream was the total opposite of a sellout.

Working at a major market Alt rock station we eagerly anticipated the release of the scream album, it got mixed reviews, the R&B kids loved it, the Soundgarden fans hated it. I personally felt it was a solid album, the whole Timbaland producing everyone thing is getting a little old though. The albums he produces seem to focus more on his skills than the skills of the artist. Timbaland is played out. If this new version of the album surfaces I will for sure pick it up. Its rock in its roots but top 40 in its appeal. I hope it drops soon. And for everyone looking for Soundgarden or Audioslave tunes, you're not going to find it on this album. Chris is a great song writer and I hope to keep hearing his music for years to come.

BobbyDavro-- You are a complete and utter t**t. In any case, getting to the main point of Scream as an album, it was most impressive taken out of the context of "what should be" a Chris Cornell album. If identity masked and ego overlooked, the album was solid. A great fallacy that people made was bringing Chris' persona into the mix instead of listening to the album for what it is. Unfortunately this must speak volumes about the uncompromisingly close minded nature of Cornell's audience and fan base who refuse to let him evolve. It's sad to think that his own fans have caged him in a genre of the past.

Armand- Hopefully in sooner than 15 years from now you will come to the realization that Scream was a forced commercialization and defamation of Chris Cornell the artist. Trent Reznor has even spoken out about how Interscope tried to push him to work with Timbaland. This was an attempt by Interscope to make Chris sell out, and for some reason he fell for it and ended up on fucking Virgin mobile ads and banners with this dog shit music that, thank God, never caught on with the mass population that is typically in love with dog shit music. Even they smelled this as a pile of stinking turds.

Agree 100% with Armand. "Grunged-up"? Nope. This version is bland AOR corporate rock and all its individuality and subtlety has been smothered in slabs of overbearing macho guitar. The original had a wonderful vulnerability and charm. God forbid Michael or Jordan or whoever they are should mess up the rest of Scream the same way - this is the worst kind of corporate crap.

lol armand you complete and utter idiot... Scream was a train wreck, a mid-life crisis played out through a shambolic attempt at being hip and trendy. Amazing. I like it much more than the original. Not that I was ever against the original version, but to me this is really, truly interesting to hear - the song is essentially the same, but in two different 'genres', and to be honest, it's kind of drawing me to a new genre (that being the former version). Doing the rest of the album this way would potentially open me to a new style of music I never really gave much credit to, and would likely make me buy both CDs.

This is complete bullcrap. Because a song has guitars on it means its better? The only reason why Chris is doing this stuff is because his fans and the general public has been so close-minded to the concept of Scream. These guys did not improve the song, all they did was strip away what made the song UNIQUE and ORIGINAL, and instead they made it sound bland, boring, and generic, just like everything else on Modern Rock radio these days. This is absurd, "Scream" is a brilliant album, and years from now people will see it as a cult classic that was ahead of it's time.

Since the Tea Party disbanded in 2005, their former frontman has been working on a solo career, among other things. The lead single from his first and so far only solo studio album, 2006's Exile and the Kingdom, is reportedly an open letter to the Bush administration.

Sounds like The Tea Party (you guessed it!), The Doors at their most worldly psychedelic
  2. Hello Beautiful

    Virginia Symphony

This Whitby band blends punk, rock, and hip hop in a refreshingly unique and engaging way. Soundtrack For Scenario is out now, and keep an ear out for a new album in 2010.

    Sounds like 311, Billy Talent
  3. Think About Life

    Sweet Sixteen

You might think about life while listening to this Montréal band, but you'll probably be too distracted having a good time.

Sounds like SLAVE to the SQUAREwave, The Sounds crossed with a light-hearted MGMT
  4. The Rural Alberta Advantage

    Don't Haunt This Place

Recently signed to Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst's record label, Saddle Creek ... catchy Toronto by way of Alberta indie rock ... incredible harmonies!

Sounds like Ra Ra Riot, Death Cab For Cutie, Hayden
  5. Najuah

    I Don't Wanna Love U

Toronto six-piece fronted by two sisters. Diverse influences, a rock & roll attitude, and some good grooves give them very broad appeal.

Sounds like No Doubt stripped of their ska, some time before Gwen went bananas.
