Your Turn to Play Talent Scout (Part 2)

Posted by: Alan Cross | Jan 19 2010 8:00AM

Yesterday, I gave you a half-dozen examples of the kind of music that passes through my offices on a typical day.  Here’s another six acts I’d like you to hear as Associate Music Directors of ExploreMusic.com.  As always, feel free to leave comments below. And if you’re so moved, I’m sure the bands themselves would appreciate an email.

Lovin' Marcone - a blend of all things good about Canadian music. The drummer is amazing too!

'Amos The Transparent' has a solid and very accessible sounding indie vibe to it. Kinda light and a bit quirky. Ninjaspy would be something I'd play at night or in special shows on weekend. I like their sound it would appeal to a niche market.

There is something really cool about the sound of Marcone. I am really feeling that sound. They could be really big.

Amos the Transparent has a cool blend of driven rock groove with mellow lyrics. I really enjoyed all the songs on their myspace. Marcone also had a great sound! It just shows how much potential is out there, and almost makes me sad that all we see on muchmusic is s****y reality shows and lady gaga. thank goodness for aux tv! speaking of music that comes across your desktop.... I recently discovered the Daptone Records label out of New York, who recently release a compilation disc entitled 'Daptone Gold'. Definitely worth checking out; they are producing a sound that has been absent from popular music for much too long. The Dap Kings backed up The Heavy (an INCREDIBLE band from the UK) on Letterman on Monday, and totally blew the roof off the building.

Amos The Transparent is one of the most dynamic and powerful bands Canada has to offer right now. The journey their debut album, "Everything I've Forgotten to Forget" takes you on is one I haven't experienced with any album ever, before it. Blows my mind how one band can seamlessly pull off so many styles on one record, all the while sounding entirely cohesive. Good call, Alan!

Only macrone stands out to me. But only because the beginning of "madlove" sounds VERY similar to kryptonite by 3 doors down haha

Thanks for the post. I love new music. Amos the Transparent is AMAZING. I don't get how there's bands like them not signed. There music is everything I look for in a band. Thanks again Steve

Ninjaspy - metal/dancehall - quite a bit like Skindred, with ill Scarlett breakdowns. Not bad at all!

5 Songs You Gotta Hear Today
  1. Kae Sun

    Lion On A Leash

The title track and first single from the genre-blurring Ghanaian/Canadian artist’s debut full length album.

Sounds like Ben Harper, Bedouin Soundclash, K-Os
  2. Darkest Hour

    Into The Grey

Death metal/hardcore merger out of DC that records for Victory Records. Latest album, The Eternal Return, dropped in 2009.

Sounds like Entombed, Lamb Of God, Carcass
  3. Voodoo Bunny

    Zed Is For Zombie

The first video from the hard-rocking pop/punk band. Lots of fun, plus they own their Canadian-ness with the first word of this song title. The Queen would approve.

Sounds like The Creepshow, Bloodsucking Zombies From Outer Space ... and a dash of Misfits, of course
  4. Rynecologist

    Burnin' Up

This Toronto DJ/producer/remixer takes the piss out of the Jonas Brothers. Let's hope this starts a trend in the electro/house community.

    Sounds like Deadmau5, Paul Oakenfold
  5. Star Eyes

    Disappear

One of the first female drum & bass DJs in the U.S., now writing and performing original tunes. She calls the style "haunted house," and that fits.

Sounds like goths taking over a rave, looking to assimilate the party-going masses through song.
