The Wood Brothers - Midnight Rider
Sure, it’s a cover of one of my favorite songs, by one of my favourite bands of all time, The Allman Brothers Band, but I really dig what the Wood Brothers have done  with this song. It’s part of the mini covers record, “Up Above My Head”, that features all kinds of great covers like Steve Earle’s “Mystery Train Pt.2”, the Beatles' “Fixin’ a Hole” and others. Their stripped down, honest sound (it’s just an acoustic guitar and stand-up bass) makes things really chill.

Jackie Greene - Till The Light Comes
This is the title track from his latest record. Jackie is a singer/songwriter from the Bay area of California. His songs are personal and melodic and they deliver an alt.country vibe that is great. This tune in particular takes a great turn around the 3 minute mark, and the whole song's vibe changes from a guitar infused rock track to a beautiful piano-focused ballad. Very, um, "Layla", if you will. The whole disc is great, and Jackie is not only a phenomenal writer, he also has a gift when it comes to both guitar and piano.

Darius Rucker - Come Back Song
Yeah, he’s doing the country thing now, but you know what? It works! It always has, in fact. It’s a poppy little number with that country twang (pedal steel and mandolin!!). Oh, and I can sing the nanananana part. Darius has one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary music and we’re fans of his work. This is the first single from his forthcoming record, Charleston, South Carolina 1966, due out in the early fall.

Ray Lamontagne & The Pariah Dogs - Beg Steal or Borrow
I mentioned to a friend a few days ago, that you can tell if you really like a record if you dig from the moment you press play. Otherwise, if it “takes a few listens”, it's familiarity you’re digging, not the track itself. There’s still some debate on that, but what you can’t deny is that Ray Lamontagne is a giant.  From the moment I hit play on the lead track from his forthcoming record, I LOVED it. It’s pure Ray and it features some great pedal steel, a great bass line and I assume it sets “God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise” up really nicely. August 17 can’t come soon enough.

I apparently moonlight in the country genre. The truth is, I dig country music a lot. The players are always top notch, not only with their instruments and songs, but as people. We met Joshua Scott Jones and Meghan Linsey earlier this week and we were really impressed. JSJ was a “rocker” (think Ryan Adams with a touch more volume) before he hooked up with Meghan and won CMT’s “You Can Duet”. Psyched to hear their new record. Good people tend to make good music.

Aaron Garner - ‘It’s a Good Life’
I met this singer/songwriter, at a campfire last week, at a friend's place in the town next to the one in which I live. He said he sang and played guitar and wrote songs and I believed him, but had no idea how talented he was, until the gang around the fire, went to a nearby jam night at a tavern. He got up and joined a local favourite named Jason Redman, and the two of them together were priceless. Aaron also covered a John Mayer tune, and it sounded better than Mayer himself. This track goes back to April 2008 from the live album ‘There And Back’.

They opened their set at the Toronto Island Concert this past weekend with this classic track from '94. Phish - Run Like an Antelope
Okay, so the Phish boys are back on the road, heating up the east coast for their Summer Tour. I've noticed that they are really into this whole "sing along to the songs you know" thing. While you can sing along to a few key phrases in this track, the real gold for me happens around the 2:17 mark of the studio version, and right around there when the band does it live. It's right after Jon Fishman's vacuum solo on the studio version, and uh, where the song takes off live. Awesome. " Set the gearshift for the high gear of your soul....You've got to run like an antelope: out of control." Nuff' said.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Tiny Light
A few years ago, we drove to Buffalo to catch our beloved Gov't Mule playing a show at the SUNY Buffalo Center for the Arts. We hadn't heard anything about the opener, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, but some dude told us she was from Vermont. When she took the stage, and strutted her stuff, it was difficult to contain our excitement. Here was a girl who lit the place up with her smokin' sultry stylings, and her band kicked major butt. She was also flirting with the crowd, which apparently translated into lots of merch sales that night. We bought the record that night, and wore out the CD all the way home. Fast forward about 4 years, and her second album on a major label dropped a few weeks ago and we're um, still in lust. Channeling all the greats, from Slick to Grace, Potter's gentle yet provocative approach (not to mention the solid musicians in the Nocturnals) will make anyone an instant fan.

The Girls - Laura
Okay, so once in a while a song grabs you, and you aren't entirely sure why. I'm a sucker for a poppy hook, and words that mean a lot. If you haven't heard from Girls (Christopher Owens and JR White) you should do so post haste. It's like this duo who form the band, have stolen the recipe from Brian Wilson, hiked up to San Francisco and devoted their life to writing gut wrenching songs. A great chill record..when you're searching, for something different, something less obvious, something, um, good.

Zac Brown Band - Jolene
I am either getting old or I am getting some sense. I've been diggin' on some "new" country lately, and one of the artists that has me really excited is Zac Brown. I think it's because he's genuine, he has fun, and just does his thing...as do his band-mates. So when this fella decided to tackle the great Ray Lamontagne, I was skeptical. While the recording is totally different than the original take (more instruments, harmonies etc.), it stays true to its roots (probably cause the song is so brilliantly written). I think it's great when you can be surprised by a song you know sooo well, and Zac accomplishes this on his take on this powerful song. If you want to experiment with some "new" country, check out Zac Brown. You'll be pleasantly surprised by this "throwbacks" stuff.

Widespread Panic - Shut Up and Drive
Driving rhythms, perfectly placed piano parts, latin percussion and GIGANTIC solos from Jimmy Herring, only partially cover the Widespread Panic story. Their front man John Bell writes virtually all their songs and brings them to the fore as one of rock's most underrated vocalists. Hard to find just one track on their 11th album Dirty Side Down that isn't true "Panic", so I'm recommending that you check out Shut Up and Drive...mostly for the killer Herring solos. That guy is a guitar god.

I'm writing this, as I listen to Ray's first "single" from the forthcoming record "God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise", that he's putting out with his band the Pariah Dogs. The song is available from his website, and its quintessential Ray. His band is also solid and the whole sound is just so down home and rootsy. The lyrics are perfect and his delivery equally impeccable. Wow, I am soo psyched for the new record.

This soulstress has been mucking about the American music landscape particularly in Detroit since 1965, and her distinct sound makes her a favorite amongst passionate R&B and Soul fans. She recently released a compilation of her favorite British songs from the 60s and 70s re-interpreted in the very unique Lavette style. This disc isn't for the Glee Club or American Idol posers. They wouldn't get her genuine, soulful and undeniable versions of classic songs from The British Rock Songbook. I could've picked every track on the record... her singing is inspiring, the arrangements are intriguing and the playing is impeccable.

I gotta believe there is something really cool in the water in the pacific northwest. Portland continues to be a hot bed of incredible music, and I gotta hand it to Sub-Pop for finding it all. Thank you. Blitzen Trapper's 6th record is filled with retro-sounding psychedelic and rootsy tunes, which you likely won't be able to get enough of . My favorite of the bunch is this duet featuring guitarist Eric Earley and Alela Diane a singer songwriter from Nevada City, California. Their voices compliment each other so perfectly with gentle harmonies and infectious spirit. You'll want to get the entire record, Destroyer of the Void, next Tuesday.

Phospherescent - I Don't Care If There's A Cursing
Fronted by Mathew Houck, this band, while originally from Athens, Georgia, now finds itself in what might be one of the hottest scenes around right now, Brooklyn, New York. The band could be lumped in with a host of other alt-country, indie-folk bands, but to say that wouldn't be giving Houck enough props for his picture perfect lyrics that should elicit at the very least a grin, if not a complete smile. The layers of instrumentation on this track, led by Scott Stapleton's piano playing, will have you foot tapping to this very solid track.

Minus the Bear - Summer Angel
Great guitar riff/hook lures you in right off the top. Can't decide if the lyrics or the playing keeps me along for the just over 4 and a half minute ride, but I dig it. I actually find the whole record really interesting, with interesting interplay between keys, guitar and a really bouncy rhythm section. Check out Omni from Minus the Bear, it's a fresh sound worth hearing.

Their fourth record, "Cinema," isn't out until the end of the month, but I've been given a sneak peak of this Australian band's latest record. Falling has everything a Cat Empire fan looks for, a great rhythm section, some horns, the sweet sound of the fender rhodes (undeniably one of the coolest instruments ever invented) and an instrumental bridge that will make you get up and do a little cha-cha, samba or heaven forbid a lambada.
